Eula Mae Compton Hughes, 105 years, 4 months, and 8 days departed this life on Saturday, February 26, 2022, at her home in Fallsburg, KY, surrounded by her loving family.  She was one of fifteen children, born on October 18, 1916, to the late Jim and Nola Arden Compton of Route 828, Dennis, KY.

Eula married the late Homer Hughes on June 29, 1931. They were the parents of twelve children, seven who preceded them in death: Homer, Jr., Bethel Marie, Faye Carol, Sue, James, Leroy, and Milton. Those surviving are Eldred (Una) Phyllis Cline, Joan Frazier, Fannie Spyers, and Debbie (Henry) Perkins.  Preceding her is death were three sisters, Lucille Burrier, Ruby Moore, and Bessie Hanna, and six brothers, Edgar, Lucion, Henry, Jimmy, Drew, and Tommy.  She is survived by five sisters, Arnleah Ashly, Opal Webb, Loray Frasher, Olive Wilson, and Toby Roberts.  She is also survived by fifteen grandchildren, twenty-four great grandchildren, and ten great great grandchildren.

Eula was always a hard worker, caring for her family, making sure her cupboards were all full, as well as the cellars full of all her canned fruits, vegetables, jams, and jellies. She was famous for her pickles, especially the kraut pickled beans and pickled corn.  Folks came from miles around to buy her pickles and pickled beets.  She was a great cook and could put a meal on the table at any given time.  She was honored a few times to feed some of the politicians who visited their home at mealtime.  She was proud to have fed Rocky Adkins who was a candidate for State Representative at one time.  She enjoyed vacationing with her family and was at the opening day of Dollywood.

Eula was a member of the Fallsburg Tabernacle for many years. There she was a Sunday School Teacher and sang in the choir.  She helped cook and serve many of the homecoming meals and dinners as long as her health permitted.  She was a Kentucky Colonel and attended the Senior Citizens Meetings for many years.  She had a loving family who cared for her.  Her daughter Joan made her home with her for the last seven years with her mother, caring for her.  Eula loved to quilt and had many beautiful ones.  Eula loved the Lord and served Him many years and was always faithful to her church.  She is now at rest with her Heavenly Father.

Funeral services will be conducted on Thursday, March 3, 2022, at 11:00 AM at the Wilson Funeral Home with Revs. Frank Copley and Jerry Hughes officiating.  Burial will follow in Yatesville Memorial Gardens.  Friends may visit the family on Wednesday, March 2, 2022, from 6:00 – 9:00 PM at the Wilson Funeral Home.  All care has been entrusted to Wilson Funeral Home.
