Mother was a very special lady. She was a people person. She wasn’t educated to be a school teacher, but her wisdom made her a great educator in life. She loved learning and always wanted to share her knowledge with others.
She was a great home maker. Mother always had a hot breakfast on the table for us and also a
complete meal waiting for us when we got home from school. There was always a two or three layer cake waiting for our birthdays because birthdays were special and just a 9X 13 wouldn’t do.
She was good in maintaining our home by painting ,wallpapering. She knew how to restore furniture and refinishing floors. Mother knew how to grow food and how to harvest it.
She taught me how to can and freeze the food and not waste one bite. Mother had a big heart. One year a neighbor didn’t have a lot for their family at Christmas time. Mother bought fur coats and clothing from Good Will and made several stuffed animals and also dolls with dresses for the children. It was probably the best Christmas they ever had. Mother was a Nutrition Aid in Wayne County for 20 years. She taught families how to get the most food for their food dollars. She showed them how to use recipes for their meals to make the food go farther. She taught us to be active and responsible in our community. If we had a job to do it with pride.
Mother could not only save in the food area of homemaking but also in clothing. I don’t think there was anything she couldn’t do with her hands and a needle. She taught herself how to crochet, knit, hardanger, embroidery and tatting.
one of the most beautiful things she did was Brazilian Embroidery.
Quilts were her next passion. She never stopped. Just had to have one for every grandchild and great grandchild. The very best thing she did for us was to keep us in church. Mother would read the bible and explain it as she went. She kept us in church and taught us to be faithful.
